“If we were building the house again...” – 5 carpentry mistakes you can avoid!

How to wisely plan your joinery so you don't regret your choices and what's worth knowing to start? Read our article, based on case studies of homeowners who would furnish them completely differently a second time.

Reality verifies our plans in the simplest, everyday situations. It can surprise us during the first window cleaning, desk setup, or an attempt to catch our breath on a hot July day. Many investors, after several years of living "in their own place," already have a long list of things they would do completely differently today. To learn from others' mistakes, not our own wallet, we have gathered five authentic stories.

Living Room Revolution. How a sash took over space

Marek and Kasia (the names of the protagonists have been changed – author's note) dreamed of a large exit from the living room to the veranda. To save money, already at the raw shell stage, they decided on double-leaf balcony doors – the classic ones, opening inwards.
Unfortunately, every meter counts in the living room, and the young couple only realized what a problem this would be when arranging the furniture. Marek recalls that every time the sash opens, it takes up a lot of space, hitting the back of the armchair. So, there's no question of placing their desired chest of drawers or a larger plant.

– It's clear that when building a house, we can't foresee everything at once, which is why it's worth seeking advice. For example, this particular problem could be solved by installing an HST system. The sash moves along a line in it, the living room gains space, and residents don't have to move furniture to open the full entrance – comments Piotr Bargieł, Product Manager in the Development Department - PVC Group.

Beautiful, large window... that can't be cleaned

Fixed glazing on the staircase or a high floor has been an undisputed hit in house designs for several years. Its simple task: to let in as much light as possible, while looking good.

Tomek also implemented such a plan in his house with the desired mezzanine: the landscape outside the window was captivating... until the first spring downpour and tree pollen season. The window ,,fix", devoid of any movable sashes, became an insurmountable barrier. Dirt from the outside cut off the sunlight, and access to the pane would require acrobatics on a ladder.

– Fixed glazing in an inaccessible place is a classic mistake, which we often only think about when we first start cleaning the windows. In such situations, I always recommend a tilt-and-turn window-turn or a division of the structure with one sash, to be able to safely clean the window from the inside. If the budget allows, self-cleaning glass units are also a great option, working thanks to the combination of two phenomena: photocatalysis and hydrophilicity. They use sunlight and rain to remove organic contaminants, without the need for detergents. Windows equipped with such panes require flush mounting with the facade – explains Piotr Bargieł.

In the Color Trap: Dark Profiles vs. Bright Interior

Monika always wanted her future home to be modern, so she unhesitatingly chose fashionable anthracite-colored profiles. The first problems began during room arrangement. When Scandinavian furniture and a buttery sofa were placed in the living room, it turned out that the thick, black frames stood out from the walls and overwhelmed the entire room.

– We often forget that we view windows daily from two different perspectives. Something that perfectly complements the roof tiles and facade might clash with the desired vision of a cozy living room inside. At DAKO, we solve this problem with the bicoloroption. We can produce windows that have one shade on the facade side and another on the inside – our expert suggests.

A wise Pole after the event: blinds and mosquito nets for later

Janusz and Ela decided that the budget was too tight at the end of the construction, so they would postpone the installation of external blinds and mosquito nets until an unspecified future. It seemed like a simple addition that could be easily installed at any time. Unfortunately, the first summer and a plague of mosquitoes brutally verified their plans, and what's more, it turned out that installing covers in an already finished building involves certain compromises.

– Postponing accessories for later is often a financial and visual trap. On a finished building, we can only install covers whose boxes, by their very nature, interfere more with the facade or permanently obscure part of the pane – notes Piotr Bargieł. – If the investors had thought about them at the stage of insulating the house, they could have been hidden under a layer of insulation. The same applies to mosquito nets: ordered as a package with windows, they will be better integrated, providing peace of mind from insects from the very first day of moving in.

The "bigger is better" trap and an unarrangeable living room

The retired couple Milena and Filip had dreamed for years of a house where they would spend peaceful evenings together playing bridge and enjoy the sun's rays without limits.

That's why they enlarged the windows on the ground floor, and installed gigantic floor-to-ceiling glazing in the dining room and living room. It quickly turned out that this drastically limited their arrangement options: there was no space for a chest of drawers, shelves, or a wardrobe, and on summer days, their TV reflected every glare of light.

– Spectacular glazing looks luxurious, but let's remember: a floor-to-ceiling window takes up an entire wall, and you can't place much under it. It's worth asking yourself if every window needs to go all the way to the floor – sometimes a classic windowsill at a height of 90 cm saves the room's arrangeability, giving us space for a TV cabinet or a desk. Let's also not forget about sun protection, e.g., facade blinds, which protect the house from overheating and help diffuse light – concludes the DAKO expert.

So how can you protect yourself from the mistakes made by the protagonists of our guide?

First and foremost, it's worth asking people who work with such projects daily about your arrangement and jointly seeking the best solutions or alternatives!
